English is the most commonly spoken language in the world today. For this reason, there is a serious need for qualified individuals to teach English to non-English speakers. Individuals can teach English to non-English speakers both foreign and domestically. Whether teaching English to individuals in your home country or abroad, the same basic principles apply. To teach English to non-native speakers effectively, an individual needs patience, persistence, and a few simple steps.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Focus on conveying meaning, not perfecting grammar. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, teachers should avoid excessively correcting the grammar of students who are struggling to learn English. It is permissible to make minor corrections here and there, but if students are constantly being corrected every time they speak, they will likely become frustrated and avoid speaking English entirely. Make sure you are as kind and gentle in your correction as possible, as you do not want to discourage students from continuing to strive to learn English.
Teach greetings. Start your English lessons by focusing on greetings. Students who do not speak English often struggle with acceptance and feel shunned by English-speaking classmates. By teaching students greetings, you can assist them in starting to forge relationships with English-speaking classmates.
Review how to fill out forms. Accurately filling out forms is a necessary skill for survival. Spend some time working with students to develop the skills necessary to read, understand, and properly fill out a form. Acquire sample job applications from local businesses or print out sample registration forms for events or conferences. Help students go through the blanks one at a time and determine what the form is asking for and how to properly format a reply. This is particularly important if you are dealing with high school age students or adults.
Instruct students about how to give out their personal information in English. Students of all ages need to know how to give out their personal information. Help students learn how to properly say their address and phone number in English. In the event of an emergency, it is vital that students have the skills necessary to give out this information.
Practice the language necessary to acquire necessities. Teach students how to ask to use the restroom, request food, or seek permission to go to the nurse. Knowing how to make these requests properly will help students ensure that their needs are being met. In the absence of the language skills necessary to make these requests, students will become frustrated.
Explore the parts of speech. Once students have learned requisite conversational speech, go over the parts of speech one at a time. Focus on the function that each word serves in each sentence and try to provide concrete examples when possible. If you are discussing the noun "bear," give the students a teddy bear to hold. If you are talking about the verb "run," demonstrate this by taking a short sprint around the classroom. These examples will help students commit the concepts to memory and increase the likelihood that they will retain the information presented in the lesson.
Teach students proper English syntax. As students learn how words function, they can begin to understand the rules of syntax. Discuss subject/object sentence construction and provide examples of how words should be ordered to produce a grammatically correct sentence. At this point, you can correct grammar more frequently. Be sure, however, to continue to be kind and encouraging. As students continue to learn the English language, correction will become less and less necessary, and their use of the language will become increasingly natural.
